The Ministry of Health has contracted Litmus and Sapere Research Group to undertake an evaluation of the four-year Bowel Screening Pilot, which began in the Waitemata District Health Board (WDHB) area in October 2011.

The evaluation will include a cost effectiveness analysis and will inform a decision about whether or not to roll out a national bowel screening programme.A number of activities are planned as part of the evaluation, including  surveys with the eligible population and with providers working within the WDHB area. The following activities have now been completed as part of the BSP Evaluation

  • two baseline quantitative population surveys of people aged 50 to 74 years - one within the WDHB region and one outside it supplementary qualitative interviews with eligible Māori and Pacific people living in WDHB
  • a quantitative baseline survey of providers in WDHB area analysis and reporting of each of these activities.
The reports published here summarise the findings from these activities.
