In 2001, Pacific people living in New Zealand comprised approximately 6 percent of the population and were expected to double to 12 percent by 2051. This report highlights the need for a long-term, planned approach to the provision of Pacific mental health services and workforce development. This paper builds on the Pacific sections of the Commission’s 1998 Blueprint for Mental Health Services in New Zealand, and is informed by a number of other key reports.

Purpose

The purpose of this discussion paper is to:

  • highlight key issues for Pacific mental health services and workforce development
  • explore Pacific perspectives and models of mental health service provision
  • estimate the resources required for the provision of mental health services for Pacific people, and
  • recommend further work for developing effective and responsive Pacific mental health services, delivered by both Pacific and mainstream services.
