An evidence-based summary of current New Zealand and overseas evidence to inform best practice in the use of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) screening in asymptomatic men.

Purpose

This report provides an evidence-based summary of current New Zealand and overseas evidence to inform best practice in the use of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) screening in asymptomatic men. The Ministry wished to update previous evidence for screening asymptomatic men for prostate cancer using the PSA test. Therefore, this report:

  • is informed by new evidence from systematic reviews, clinical trials, cohort studies, case-control studies and case series data relating to PSA testing in asymptomatic men for mortality and morbidity outcomes and for the accuracy of the PSA test
  • provides useful information which can be used to inform decision making with regards to screening programme development and guidance.
