This report is a three-year review of the Voluntary Bonding Scheme for medical, nursing and midwifery graduates, run by Health Workforce New Zealand.

The Scheme, which started in 2009, is a practical initiative designed to move graduates into the communities and specialties that need them most and retain essential health workforces in New Zealand.

Key Results

Conclusions include:
  • open the Scheme to doctors who complete their GP vocational training in hard-to-staff areas
  • improve the methodology used to determine hard-to-staff areas and specialties
  • an updated database to reduce the administrative burden of the Scheme.
