The Government’s work to address the Drivers of Crime is co-led by the Minister of Justice and the Minister of Māori Affairs. Te Puni Kōkiri is working with the Ministry of Justice and other agencies on an interagency work programme, Addressing the Drivers of Crime. As a contribution to this work, Te Puni Kōkiri has developed a Working Paper called Addressing the Drivers of Crime for Māori.
The paper sets out a policy approach informed by engagement with Māori service providers, practitioners, offenders and whānau, work with other agencies, and from local and international literature. The intention of the Working Paper is to share the framework guiding Te Puni Kōkiri’s work in this area and to invite further discussion.
The evidence base of ‘what works for Māori’ is very limited. Building the empirical evidence base is an important step going forward. Evaluations of six Māori designed, developed, delivered initiatives to prevent or reduce offending are published below.(Note that two initiatives have two evaluation reports).
